Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World

www.wooldirectory.org.uk

Wool Directory online - connecting SW wool producers to wool users it is a new free online database initiated by the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World in collaboration with Claire Crompton of Give Fleece A Chance. Wool is currently enjoying a renaissance among wool users as a sustainable, versatile and locally sourced material. What is missing, however, is an easy way for wool users spinners, weavers, dyers, artists and product makers to connect to the producers. The answer is the web-based Wool Directory - a free and easy to use database. Wool producers market your fleece or yarn to potential buyers and connect with others in the wool supply chain. Wool users connect with producers, share information and promote your products. The new Wool Directory is the latest in a series of projects, which, over the past two years, CCANW has initiated to raise the profile of wool, its use by makers, designers and artists, and its contribution to the economy and local distinctiveness. The Wool Directory is free and easy to join. See www.wooldirectory.org.uk for further details.

From 11:00

The Weaver's House, 119 Upper Spon Street, Coventry, CV1 4DE

Annual Heritage Weekend Come and visit the fascinating Weaver's House at this year's annual heritage weekend! The Weaver's House has been recreated as the home of John Croke, a weaver, as it might have been in 1540. Each of the six houses in Black Swan Terrace were built as one structure and would have looked like this one, however when we came to do the restoration 122 was the one which was easiest to restore to its medieval state. Except that, in line with the general conservation policies of the trust we have kept the 18th Century chimney and stairs. There would also not have been any glass in the windows - sliding shutters would have been used to keep the cold out. The house was built in 1455 by the Priory and, following the dissolution of the monasteries, eventually came into the possession of the Mercer's Company (one of a large number of craft guilds in Coventry - Mercers were general traders). The houses each had three rooms, the Hall, the chamber or parlour to the rear and the solar (or second chamber) above. What makes these houses special is the internal jetty. You will have seen jetties like this on the outside of medieval buildings, but the only surviving buildings with internal jetties are these and Abbey Cottages in Tewksbury. When the house was first built you would have had to go through the Chamber to get to the back. Very soon after it was built this arrangement was changed and a passage was put in between the front and back doors with a door into the chamber. People then put a ceiling on the passage to create a storage area above. We have not recreated the full passage.
