Anderson & Sheppard Student Design

Anderson & Sheppard hold The Royal Warrant for The Campaign for Wool’s patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. In the 1970’s The Prince of Wales had an overcoat made that he still wears today and he has been at the forefront of sustainable fashion for a number of years. In reflection of this and to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of his Campaign, Anderson & Sheppard collaborated with Abraham Moon & Sons to develop a fabric design from a student to produce an overcoat that offers comfort, and is made to last a number of years. Students were given the concept of the Southbank in London to create a fabric design rich with texture, patterns and checks with clever uses of tonal colours.

The Southbank has multiple eras of Architecture and bridges and the urban landscape has various components from The Thames, glass, brick, wood and concrete buildings, there are book shops/markets, skateboarders and offices to take inspiration from.

“We are very grateful to have been part of the Campaign for Wool since its launch in 2010. 80% of the garments that we tailor are made from woollen cloth and 90% of that cloth is made in the United Kingdom so we are very familiar with this exceptional, natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre. The Campaign has been very successful in educating young people coming into the textile industry as well as helping the end customer to make better choices when buying clothing. Wool Week is also the perfect opportunity to share our values and this design competition allowed us to collaborate and develop a new innovative, contemporary coating cloth with Abraham Moon & Sons Ltd and the University of Huddersfield Department of Fashion and Textiles.” Colin Heywood, Managing Director, Anderson & Sheppard Bespoke

“This brand new fabric combines different weaves in a 2 as 1 structure to achieve an authentic tweed appearance whilst utilising our softest pure wool (lambswool) yarns. Our signature mélange colours are arranged end and end in the warp with coloured highlights for a contemporary stripe effect. Combined with our ‘softwash’ finish, the resultant fabric is soft in handle with drape and volume. The fabric has been created from fibre to finished cloth at our vertical mill in Guiseley, Yorkshire.” Judith Coates, Design Director, Abraham Moon and Sons Ltd

“Industry links and sponsored projects have always formed an important part of the curriculum on our courses at Huddersfield University. Nothing can compare with the experience student’s get when responding to a live brief and working to the specific parameters set by industry experts. These opportunities not only refine the student’s design skills but expose them to the realities of textile manufacture, cost constraints, performance requirements and tight timescales. Soft skills in effective communication and presentation are also enhanced, as they gain invaluable insight into the breadth of potential careers across the textile industry.” Nicola Redmore, Subject Group Leader – Fashion and Textiles, University of Huddersfield

“My work was inspired by the architecture in the Southbank of London, this was a great starting point for establishing colour ways especially. In this project I learnt how to adapt my style to fit the criteria of the brief; maintaining my individuality as well as producing a commercial cloth. Due to Covid-19 I faced further challenges which I did not initially predict. I had to adjust to a completely new way of working. The hardest part of this for me was designing without a loom; making samples, experimenting with different yarns and identifying the visual and textural impact of these decisions in person are all huge parts of my design process. For this to be reduced to solely digital was definitely a big change for me which definitely taught me how to adapt quickly and under pressure to different ways of working.” Emma Herst, Winning Student
