It would seem there’s now bags of reasons to shop at Waitrose, with today marking the official launch of their woolly bag made with 100% wool – unbaalievable we know.
Whilst these bags may not come complete with a tail or four legs, they are both sustainable and biodegradable with a luxury twist, providing a practical and delightful alternative to the plastic bag.
We would certainly understand if you’d like to purchase one for storing and stroking –the bags are available at Waitrose Belgravia, Gloucester Road and Marylebone.
You will have not one but two styles to choose from – a large shopper (£25) and a shoulder bag (£20). Made exclusively for Waitrose by British company twool, the new super sustainable ‘woolly bag’ is made with the wool of rare-breed Whiteface Dartmoor sheep. Indigenous to Dartmoor and farmed on Duchy land they are one of Britain’s most ancient breeds – an important part of our heritage. The length of their wool means it’s perfect for spinning whilst the yarn ensures it is both strong and soft to touch – a winning combination we’re sure you’ll agree.
Kim Stead, from twool, says, ‘We’ve used the latest cloth finishing technology, to ensure these bags are waterproof and long-lasting for shoppers to be able to use time and time again.’
Here at Campaign For Wool, we support the creation of these bags and the opportunity for change they offer. In 2013, supermarkets gave out over 8 billion single-use carrier bags across the UK. That’s nearly 130 bags per person!
As we move towards a ‘zero waste economy’, we want to try to reduce, reuse and recycle and an easy place to start is on our shopping trips.
Laura Strangeway, Manager of Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing at Waitrose, says: ‘We’re thrilled to be supporting both British farmers and heritage manufacturing in such a unique way. Wool is one of the oldest naturally occurring raw materials around and is currently an underused natural resource. The bags twool have created are renewable, sustainable and very practical’.
With the 5p charge on single-use plastic carrier bags in England coming into fruition on 5 October 2015, the Waitrose Woolly Bag will be our shopping staple.
