23 October 2013

With humble beginnings, starting in the home of Tweed in the United Kingdom in 2009, The Tweed Run has ventured further afield, making an appearance in both Tokyo, Nagoya and Kobe this year.

On the 14th October 2013, 150 participants gathered at the Shared Terrace Restaurant Tokyo, to enjoy a light breakfast with fellow competitors before the ride. The Opening Ceremony soon followed and riders were treated to a speech by Mr Hirofumi Kurino, Chairman of the Tokyo Run, Tokyo Committee and Senior Advisor for Creative Direction, United Arrows LTD, and Ted Young-Ing. This bolstering talk was then followed by an acrobatic bike show to entertain the crowds.

The Woolmark Company CEO, Stuart McCullough, took to the stage looking perfect dressed in top to toe tweed and he wasn’t the only one, not only the riders but also the supporting crowds were all impeccably dressed in tweed. The CEO took a moment to address the integral nature and importance of wool when discussing tweed before being called upon to wave the flag to launch the ride

Only five lucky winners were crowned out of the 150 or more participants that entered this year, with the chosen few presented with a 100% Merino Wool Scarf as one of their wooly prizes. Following the ride, participants were treated to a Tea Party at Minoru Café at the Ginza Mitsukoshi Isetan department store to relax and enjoy the Tweed Tea Party.
