Wool Week Amsterdam begins! Knitted Yarn Bomb by Alice O’Connell at 180 Amsterdam

Monday November 3rd, early in the morning, a Knitted Yarn Bomb has been placed on the building of 180 Amsterdam at the Herengracht 506.

Using the 180 Amsterdam colours of Black, White and Red, Alice O’Connell knitted the piece exclusively in lambswool and merino using her Brother KH8881 (circa 1982) domestic manual knitting machine. ‘I used a variety of colour work techniques in order to showcase the wool and to create something bold and graphic which I hope proves to provoke reaction and conversation from passers by’.

Alice O’Connell runs Amsterdam based boutique knitwear label, Wool & Water. Wool & Water strives to celebrate natural fibres, the knitted textile and a desire to combine tradition with a contemporary aesthetic. ‘When the opportunity arose to create something that represented the creative energies of 180 Amsterdam exclusively in Wool for Amsterdam Wool Week, it was too good an opportunity to miss!’

The street art nature of a yarn bomb directly combines the traditional craft of knitting with a contemporary and creative form in which to present it. 180 Amsterdam creates content, in all advertising forms and their creative is shared with an often global audience, so by designing and knitting a yarn bomb for their entrance Alice says: ‘I felt I could creatively present what they do in a totally different form and in a way which celebrates the durability and beauty of wool!’
