Described by Wired Magazine as one of the top 10 start-ups in London, Unmade have developed the technology for industrial customisation, enabling the world’s most innovative fashion brands to manufacture uniquely customised knitwear at scale.
To individual customers it represents a chance to get involved in the design process, choosing a garment to customise online from their experimental UMd label which includes collaborations with designers such as Christopher Raeburn and Katie Jones, and more recently Opening Ceremony.
Their model is both sustainable and efficient as they operate a zero waste policy and hold no stock – everything is made to order
No wonder The New York Times stated that ‘Unmade is on a mission to change the fashion industry one knit at a time.’
Earlier this year we met up with one of the business’ three Founders; Ben Alun-Jones, at their design studio and production space within the creative hub of Somerset House Studios to talk about the inspiration, business model, materials and manufacturing processes that make Unmade so unique.
Where does wool fit into this incredibly innovative business? For Ben and his team the twist is in using technology and industrial machinery to make a natural product, with the innate quality and durability that only wool offers.
Take a look – we were really inspired and hope you are too!
If you’ve enjoyed our chat with Ben we’re offering ony lucky winners the chance to win a customisable garment from the UMd collection.
The closing date to enter is 4th December, 2016 and the winner will be announced on the UMd Studio Facebook page on 5th December.
