Sydney’s newest premium shopping mall is getting a woolly take over as it joins in the Wool Week Australia celebrations.

Macquarie Centre will take centre stage as it plays host to 40 unique crafted sheep sculptures, a magnificent giant wool installation and most importantly a special shopping night May 21 from 5pm in the name of wool. Join Macquarie Centre for a night of champagne, entertainment and special offers as Australia’s most premium natural fibre takes the limelight. Plus, receive an exclusive gift bag to take home with you when you spend $180 or more on a wool product from participating stores*.

Wool Week Australia, which officially starts today and runs to May 24, will see wool in all its glory take over shop windows in an explosion of colour and Campaign for Wool retailers showcase the versatility of the wonderful fibre. Fashion stores in Macquarie Centre will also be championing their latest winter collections, helping shoppers prepare for the cooler months as the chilly nights start to set in.

Australian architects Wendy and Craig Taylor of Red Blue Architecture and Design have collaborated with the Campaign for Wool to create the installations at Macquarie Centre. The installation showcases both the wonderful tactile nature of wool and the various techniques that are employed in the creation of woollen products. The main structure of the installation is an abstracted form that unfolds, twists and interlocks creating an object that at the same time both reflects the form of the rolling hills that sheep idly graze upon and may be viewed as a deconstructed weaving loom. It explores weaving, macramé, sewn and strung techniques whilst celebrating the multitude of woollen products including fabric, felt, yarn, thread and wool top.

Meandering through the fashion floor of the Macquarie Centre and around the installation will be a flock of uniquely crafted sheep, illustrating the sheep to shop process and celebrating wool in a modern context.

Emerging fashion designer Felicity Gleeson – who was awarded a scholarship from The Woolmark Company to go towards her graduate collection at the University of Technology, Sydney – will also showcase a selection of beautifully crafted wool garments.
