The Society Of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) is the leading independent, educational charity dedicated to communicating the science of colour with an international network of regions and activities. Their goal is to further educate and support the future generations of art, craft and textiles by working with Sponsors, Schools and their pupils around the world.

The Campaign For Wool joined SDC member, Malcolm Campbell to support the recent success of his book series, ‘Malcolm The Weaver’. He states that ‘children aged 4-8 years old are the textile designers, colourists, knitters, artists and weavers of tomorrow, which is why teaching them about wool, design, colour and textiles is so important and a great investment for the future.’ The ‘Malcolm The Weaver’ book series brings value to local communities and their schools who have already begun to use the books as a platform to develop their own educational projects. They help young people to understand and appreciate the importance of Britain’s textiles industry and encourage them to take further interest in the craft.

SDC is now receiving more support from new sponsors than ever before. Most recently: Johnstons of Elgin who sponsored 150 books to schools in Moray Borders regions on Scotland, The British Wool Marketing Board – 500 books for sheep rearing areas of the UK
and The Harris Tweed Authority – 100 books to all primary schools and libraries in the Outer Hebrides. Other sponsors also include: AF White/Evva Prest, Ashley Bank Investments, Border Technologies Ltd, Bute Fabrics, C&J Antich, Camira Fabrics Ltd, Charlie Allen, Dumfries House (Future Textiles project), Dystar, The Incorporation of Weavers of Glasgow, Schofields Dyers & Finishers, Skopes, Standard Wool (UK) Ltd, Walker Slater Retail Ltd, Williams Bain, The Worshipful Company of Dyers, The Worshipful Company of Weavers and WT Johnson & Sons.

Over the past six years SDC’s team have been actively developing a very successful programme of educational activities for children in Key Stage 1 (up to seven years old). As part of this development they are continually looking for innovative ideas to engage young children.
