Wool Week London 2014: Summary, Interiors Activity

In addition to the Wool Week Fashion Activity, The Campaign for Wool implemented a series of design, textiles and interior displays and activities for members of the public to engage and interact with also.

Wool Collections: Interiors:

An incredible 8,200 visitors made it to Wool Collection: Interiors at the superb Southwark Cathedral during Wool Week.  This curated capsule follow-on from Wool House, exhibited an edit of wool interior pieces including a selection of specially commissioned items.  The stunning tapestry by Weftfaced and the amazing Desert Rose rug from the Edward Fields Collection by Tai Ping were just two showstoppers.  In total there were about sixty items drawn from the high street, designer, bespoke and commercial sectors. Fabrics, flooring, furnishings and lifestyle items from names such as Jonathan Adler, Christopher Farr, Roger Oates, Designers Guild, Camira Fabrics, Alternative Flooring, Brintons, Melin Tregwynt, Solva Woollen Mill, Bute Fabrics, Naomi Paul, Tracy Kendall and Pentreath and Hall with Fine Cell Work to name just a few..  The Cathedral hosted the dramatic Erdem runner by Brintons – which with the fabulous Angela Wright installation ‘Wool Walk’ provided the ultimate in floor and ceiling level wool experiences.

Wool Fringe:

A small selection of student award winners and innovative design concepts from the UK and New Zealand were also on display at the Southwark Cathedral, we could not be prouder to represent some of the fantastic work that is shaping wool innovation every day.

Meet the Makers & Workshops: 

To coincide with the Wool Week exhibition at the Southwark Cathedral, CfW decided to offer a variety of knitting workshops and Meet the Maker talks in order to contextualise what was on display as well as encouraging interactivity with the fibre. As always the workshops went down exceptionally well, we had hoped to teach new skills to many who already love to knit and encourage a new generation to learn the technique so that we can ensure wool will continue to have an on going presence.

We would like to thank, Marie Wallin, Debbie Bliss, Margo Selby, Caron Penney of Weftfaced, Naomi Paul, Adam Atkinson of Chercbi and all of those who attended both the Meet the Maker talks and the workshops for their time, effort and fantastic enthusiasm.

One Wool Online / Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour:

ONEWOOL.com, an online gallery showcasing the largest collection of wool interior products was created to celebrate Wool Week, London 2014. To celebrate the launch Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour immersed itself in the celebration and commissioned its own witty take on a modern art gallery, showcasing a select number of pieces from the collection for the public to touch and enjoy. With a nod to famous artists such as Miro, Rothko, Klee, Fontana, Emin and Mondrian, the original ‘ONEWOOL Gallery’ was dedicated to show directional wool fabrics and carpets from some of the most important names in the industry. Specially devised to be eye-catching, contemporary and fun, everything on display was set to highlight what is happening in the world of wool interiors right now.

Tweed Tea Party:

To mark the end of Wool Week 2014 London, and in order to celebrate an all round fantastic week of exhibitions, promotions, competitions and workshops, The Campaign for Wool hosted a Tweed Tea Party! The gathering was lovely and intimate; we saw some fantastic vintage tweed attire represented which is always a delight to see. No tea party is complete without scones and a cuppa, and the Queen Elizabeth room at Southwark Cathedral (which has been full to the brim with a wonderful collection of wool interior pieces) presented the perfect setting for a cosy tea party now that winter is upon us.

PicKnit / LoveWool:

LoveWool is for all of our wool loving community all year long; please enter your own event or your PicKnit on the map. The Campaign offered two stunning cushion patterns for LoveWool this year – designed by the talented Marie Wallin, they are still available for free download.

PicKnit events were held across the UK and also a major PicKnit was held at the Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace during Wool Week. The UK Hand knitting Association put together an impressive Pergola of knitted flowers and invited visitors to sit down at their PicKnit tables and contribute to their hugely successful event. Thank you to UKHKA!

62 events have taken place so far this year, we can’t wait to see how many more wish to.
